The Community Food Security & Gardening Program empowers refugee and immigrant families to improve food security, nutrition, and household well-being through community gardening, nutrition education, and sustainable food production. By providing access to garden space, agricultural training, fresh produce, and community partnerships, USRWYEC helps families reduce food insecurity, build self-reliance, preserve cultural farming traditions, and strengthen community connections.

The Community Food Security & Gardening Program was created from a simple belief: every family deserves access to healthy food, a sense of belonging, and the opportunity to build a more sustainable future.

Many refugee and immigrant families bring rich agricultural knowledge, farming traditions, and a deep connection to the land from their countries of origin. However, after resettlement, many face challenges such as limited access to affordable fresh produce, unfamiliar food systems, financial barriers, and the loss of traditional gardening practices that once supported their families.

USRWYEC created this program to reconnect families with their agricultural skills while providing opportunities to grow nutritious foods, share cultural knowledge, and strengthen community relationships. Through community gardens, gardening education, and partnerships, families gain the tools and resources needed to improve nutrition, increase food independence, and create healthier lifestyles.

Beyond growing food, our gardens grow community. They provide a welcoming space where refugee and immigrant families, youth, volunteers, and community partners come together to learn, collaborate, and support one another. The program promotes environmental responsibility, cultural preservation, youth engagement, and long-term community resilience.

The Gardening Literacy Program at United Swahili Refugee Women and Youth Empowerment Center (USRWYEC) builds knowledge, confidence, and skills among refugee and immigrant individuals and families by connecting gardening education with food security, healthy living, and community empowerment. The program helps participants understand sustainable food production, nutrition, environmental stewardship, and the benefits of growing their own food.
