Community outreach and family support initiatives

The Baby Supplies and Family Care Resources Program at United Swahili Refugee Women and Youth Empowerment Center (USRWYEC) provides critical support to refugee and immigrant families in Akron, Ohio, by helping parents meet the essential needs of newborns and young children while strengthening family stability and community well-being.

Many newly arrived families face challenges such as limited income, unfamiliar support systems, language barriers, and difficulty accessing essential childcare resources. By providing baby supplies, family care resources, and connections to community services, the program reduces stress for parents and creates a healthier foundation for children during their earliest stages of development.

Program Benefits and Community Impact

  • Supports Healthy Beginnings for Babies: Provides essential items such as diapers, infant supplies, hygiene products, and baby care resources that contribute to the health, safety, and comfort of newborns and young children.
  • Reduces Financial Pressure on Families: Helps refugee and immigrant parents manage the high costs associated with raising infants, allowing families to focus on housing stability, employment, education, and long-term integration.
  • Strengthens Maternal and Infant Health: Connects families with health education, prenatal and postnatal resources, healthcare providers, WIC, Medicaid assistance, and other maternal and child support services.
  • Promotes Safe Parenting Practices: Provides parenting education, newborn care information, safe sleep awareness, child safety education, and family wellness support.
  • Improves Access to Community Resources: Helps families navigate available services in Akron and Summit County by connecting them with healthcare, childcare, early childhood programs, and social support networks.
  • Builds Stronger Family Support Networks: Creates opportunities for refugee and immigrant parents to connect with community partners, volunteers, and other families, reducing isolation and increasing belonging.
  • Supports Early Childhood Development: Ensures children have access to resources that promote healthy growth, learning readiness, and positive developmental outcomes.
  • Strengthens Community Inclusion: Brings together healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, businesses, faith communities, and volunteers to create a welcoming support system for newcomer families.
